Mother's Day Brunch Tablescape Blog Hop

Today, I am excited to join 5 other bloggers on a week long blog hop sponsored by Balsam Hill in honor of Mother's Day. Balsam Hill asked me to create a Mother's Day Brunch tablescape feauring one of their beautiful Artificial Floral Arrangements, and share my thoughts on motherhood.

I think that one of my most important job's as a mother, is to pass down the love from a long line of mothers before me to my children. Having strong family roots has helped me through hard times in my life. I hope that honoring past generations of my family and of my husbands family in our daily life will instill this comfort and peace in my children as well. Since I have a passion for homemaking and decorating, I use our home as a way to honor family and carry on traditions.

For instance, looking at this Mother's Day Brunch table I set for my family, I see more than just a nice tablescape. I see hints of my mom, my grandmother, my husbands mom and her mother.

Boxwood and tulips always remind me of my mom. Growing up, our courtyard featured a path to the front door lined with hundreds of tulips and boxwood shrubs. Most summertime evenings my mom could be found in her gardens weeding, trimming and watering. This is where we would share our day with her and have intimate conversations. It may be why to this day boxwood and tulips can be found around my home.

(The Balsam Hill Faux Floral Arrangement Featured here is called The Boxwood Topiary in Tuscan Planter)

Cobalt blue beaded candle holders remind me of my Grandma. They represent childhood memories of visiting her during the summer. She was an antique dealer and had an extensive collection of vintage cobalt glassware that we used for family meals at her home. From the time I was very little until this day, whenever I see cobalt glassware I think of her and remember those fun visits to her home in Traverse City, Michigan.

Our heirloom milk glass tea cups remind me of my husbands Grandma. She had a passion for entertaining her children and grandchildren during the holidays. When I married into the family, I was immediately welcomed into their traditions which included big family dinners.  Memories of those good times are present whenever we use these milk glass tea cups that we inhereted after she passed away.

On the menu for Mother's Day is a special recipe that my Mother in Law passed on to me early in my marriage to her son. In addition to being very hardworking, she is a gentle and loving mother and grandmother. When my husband and the kids are in need of comfort food, I make them her special lasangna. It's unlike any other version we've ever had, using Swiss Cheese in place of Mozzarella. Although mine never turns out as well as hers, it still reminds us of her and her love.

For dessert, it's a local Detroit area favorite and known to my kids as "mom's favorite" Bumpy Cake.

My ultimate hope as a Mom is for the love I have for my family to be remembered. If future generations can look at something (like a flower, a candle holder, a tea cup or a certain food) and it sparks a happy memory that makes them feel loved, then I'll consider my mission accomplished.

Tomorrow, stop by My Sweet Savannah to see the tablescape she created using a Balsam Hill Floral arrangement and hear her thoughts on motherhood. I am really hoping she shares one of her amazing recipes! For more inspiring Mother's Day Brunch ideas, you can join the blog hop from the beginning...

Moody Blue and Steely Gray Design Plan

Before the holiday posts begin, I'd like to take a little time to share what we have been busy working on every day behind the scenes. I'm very excited to have our online design services available again after being booked for the past few months.  If you are interested in learning more about our online design plan service, please click here for details.

This is a project we just wrapped up for some (very special) returning clients, Gary and Chris...

(Living Room)

They have been busy making updates and improvements to their home, including beautiful, brand new hardwood floors, fresh paint, new furniture and beautiful upgrades to their kitchen. They asked us to create a design plan that would finish off the Living Room and Kitchen to make them feel complete.

(Kitchen)

Using the fantastic paint color palette chosen by my clients (BM Symphony and BM Adagio), and the gorgeous new dark hardwood flooring and cabinetry they installed as our guide, we got to work creating a custom design plan to help them tie the two spaces together and give their home a finished look.

(Living Room and Kitchen)

Accessories, new upholstery, rugs, toss pillows and stunning new window treatments were carefully chosen to give the spaces a fun, fresh, transitional design that Gary and Chris appreciate. We selected large scale items that will have big impact in the space. Large scale items allowed us to use the "less is more" theory while achieving a completely finished look.

*One sneaky design trick that we used in this plan to create seamless flow between the two spaces was to repeat the same rug in both rooms. Gary and Chris already have the rug in a circle shape in the living room in front of the fireplace. Our suggestion is to purchase the same rug in a large rectangular shape to place under the dining table in the kitchen.

Thanks for stopping by! Stay tuned for more of our recent design projects!

Warming Up A Cool Color Palette With Rich Wood Tones

Today's featured online design plan was created for our client, Jana. Our goal in this project was to design a serene, relaxing and comfortable living room for her young family. After viewing photos of Jana's home and getting to know her through our online consultation, we delivered a design plan that included a complete product source list, and step by step instructions on how to implement the new design.

Here is a look at her design board featuring some of the products we recommended:
(All product sources are listed at the bottom of this post)

Below is the true to scale floor plan illustration we prepared for Jana. This birds-eye view allows her to see where each piece we selected should be placed:

A palette of grays and blues provide a spa like feel which lends a feeling of relaxation. To keep the space from feeling stark or cold, we warmed up the design with rich, medium wood tones.

For example, this beautiful, warm wood toned end table from Ballard Designs not only looks great but is uber functional due to the extra storage it provides. A clean-lined,  gray slip covered sofa looks neat and  tailored while being a great choice for a young family. The removable, washable slip cover allows for frequent cleaning. These two pieces together are the perfect combination of cool gray and warm wood.

We chose this gorgeous, dark blue upholstered chair not only for the fantastic color, but also for it's nice shape.  We selected a basket style end table from Home Decorators to place next to the new chair. This piece is perfect for storing throw blankets or toys. The finish is nice and rich an complements the other wood tones in the room.

How fun are these metal orbs? They are great for accessorizing her mantle or the new bookcase we placed in this space.

This bar cabinet from Wayfair placed adjacent to Jana's piano, filled with beverage supplies is perfect for entertaining. When the family is not entertaining, it looks beautiful with the doors neatly closed.

This large rug adds warmth to the design and anchors the seating area.  It features an amazing, soft color palette and an eye-catching yet subtle pattern.

A pair of lamps provide soft tranquil lighting to the room.  What I really love about this particular lamp is the large size, fun shape and the combination of a clear glass base with contrasting dark shade. Custom toss pillows from Etsy bring in the beautiful blue accent color and add instant personality to the sofa's.

We suggested painting this space a neutral color like Revere Pewter from Benjamin Moore. This color looks great with grays and also works with warmer colors.  It's all around versatile, go-to, never-fail neutral.

A large, abstract art piece like this from Amazon was recommended for the space above the new bar cabinet. The blue/gray color palette of this canvas painting is stunning, not to mention the movement and texture a piece like this lends to the space is amazing.

In addition to the items shown in this post, there were more recommendations and specific product selections provided in Jana's design plan. Drapery, additional furniture and accessories were included to deliver a complete, professional, ready to implement design plan.

Soft Blue and Coral Master Bedroom Retreat

Today's featured design board is from an online design plan we just wrapped up for a gorgeous master bedroom suite.  Our goal was to give her a sophisticated, unique design using a combination of her existing items and new pieces.

To cozy up the large space,  we brought in a pair of chairs and a fabulous tufted ottoman to create an inviting seating area either at the foot of the bed, or along the wall.

The bed is the main focal point in the space.  Layers of new bedding and a fresh coat of paint on her headboard (to match a new dresser we introduced) give her existing bed a sumptuous new life.

Flanking the bed are two nightstands in a painted finish.  These character rich end table are from Ballard designs.  The same look can also be achieved by purchasing a consigned set of nightstands and giving them a makeover with paint and new hardware.

The color scheme for this space began with her existing soft soft blue wall color.  We added white, navy and coral accents to give her an amazing custom palette.  Large scale art can make the difference between a nicely decorated space and a space that has the designer wow factor.   Making an investment in large scale pieces and saving on other smaller items is a good way to balance the project allowance.

The art we suggested for Maddie's bedroom would fill the wall space nicely, and bring personality and color in an uncluttered way.  These prints are 29" x 29" and big in personality.  After finding them for Maddies space, I added them to my collection of favorite home decor.  "Maddie's Prints" can purchased in my shop by clicking here.

Thank you, Maddie for inviting me into your home.  We enjoyed working with you in your amazing space!

Two Day Makeover~The Design Plan

Yesterday, I kicked off my Two Day Makeover series.  In these posts I will take you through a recent room makeover beginning to end.  This project began as a typical online design plan project for Brian and Heidi's nursery.  Until I decided to fly to Denver to install the room, all by myself (no painters, carpenters or design assistants) in just two days (which is where the "challenge" comes in).

The Design Plan

I started this project the usual way, by having Brian and Heidi complete my project questionnaire.  The questionnaire gave me insight into their design preferences, lifestyle and budget.  It also told me everything I needed to know about the space (including photos and measurements).

Here are photos of the room submitted by Brian and Heidi…

After the questionnaire consultation I got to work designing their nursery.  As with all online design projects, I created a plan that included an inspiration board, a shopping list with specific product sources, a true to scale floor plan, and simple step-by-step instructions on how to implement the design.

Here is the inspiration board I created for them...

Here is an illustration of the room and new furniture arrangement…

Brian and Heidi plan to spend a lot of family time together in the mountains throughout Sully's childhood.  (Sully is the babies name, isn't it cute?)  Heidi mentioned that she loved the "let him sleep…" quote and from that, the mountain theme was conceived.  To get the creative process started, I began studying mountain images.  This image really stood out to me (a photo wall mural found here)  and strongly influenced the design...

From this image, I drew inspiration from the beautiful snow capped mountains and the amazing color palette of gray, dark blue, citrus green and brown. Brian and Heidi chose a beautiful crib, dresser and rocker and had it on order when we began working together.  Based on the budget Brian and Heidi set, I completed the nursery design with drapery, bedding, storage, custom paint colors, art and accessories.

After the design plan was complete, I ordered everything on the product source list and had it shipped directly to Brian and Heidi's home in Denver.  Since they decided to be completely surprised by the room design at the big reveal, Brian and Heidi had strict instructions not to peek in any of the boxes.

Next up... I pack up my design plan, leave Detroit and fly to Denver.

This Two Day Makeover series includes:
