From Blank Slate To Completely Finished Family Room Design Plan

I'm very excited to announce that The Yellow Cape Cod Design Studio currently has openings for new projects! After an amazing year that had us completely booked, we are now caught up and ready to take on new E-Design projects! (Please note that our schedule during this time of year can fill up fast, now is a great time to make your E-Design reservation).

Depending on the individual wishes of each client, some of our design plans incorporate current design elements like paint, drapes, and furnishings while other projects start with a blank slate. Like this Family Room we recently designed for Melissa...

(All product sources available at the end of this post).

Melissa came to us and asked for a design plan that included recommendations for everything the room needed to create a brand new, high-style, timeless, professionally designed Family Room for her family to enjoy. She had a great start with a lovely paint color (SW Requisite Gray) and beautiful hard wood floors (Chelsea North Bay Hickory). Melissa had her eye on a few specific products (like an Arhaus Sofa), but wanted professional guidance and a detailed plan to follow before making any investments.

We had Melissa complete our questionnaire and send us photos and measurements of the space. Then,  we got to work creating a custom design based on her style preferences, lifestyle and budget.

Here is a look at the design plan we created for her:

Lower Level {Basement} Family Entertainment Room

With the end of the school year winding down, we are all thinking about having the kids around more.  Today's featured design plan is a space we just designed for a young family and their lower level (basement) family room hangout.  Our goal was to give them a family room that was comfortable and high style.  We wanted the look to be sophisticated, but not too stuffy for the kids.  We also wanted a design that would grow along with the kids over the years.

Here is a little peek at what designed for them…

Here is a birds-eye look at the space showing the items we selected...

We selected this large, cozy, handsome sectional for the TV viewing area.  We also added a grouping of three oversized bean bags for the floor.

We created a small seating group on the opposite end of the space.  These whimsical chairs from West Elm add a fun pop of pattern and color.  This fabulous cocktail table is perfect for the kids to crowd around for snacks and board games.

This is a large area, therefore we used a few different groupings of art.  It was important to use groupings and large scale pieces to fill the empty wall space. We also added a large gallery of the children's art framed in simple black frames and hung in an attractive gallery style grouping.

We brought accent and task lighting to the area with these character rich floor lamps.  These lamps are also a fabulous design element.

This fun collection of toss pillows bring pattern, color and interest to the sofa.

For the wall color, we suggested this beautiful neutral, "Revere Pewter" by Benjamin Moore.

This family is so lucky to have a family rec room that is big enough to incorporate a kitchenette area.  We took full advantage of this by adding some really fun elements like this fantastic console table by Potterybarn Teen, a gumball machine and a vintage inspired popcorn maker.

By mixing fun elements like this with sophisticated furnishings we have created a space the whole family will enjoy for a long time.

Thank you to my client, Julie for giving us the opportunity to design your new family rec room.  Enjoy your summer!  These are just some of the elements we included in Julie's design plan.  In addition to the items and ideas shared in this post we also gave her additional furniture recommendations and step by step instructions on putting her new design in place.

I'm now accepting new clients if you have a space that needs a new look.

A Young Fresh Transitional Style Family Room And Foyer

Today's featured design plan is for Nicole's Family Room and Foyer.  We've had the honor of designing a few spaces in her home and we were so excited when she recently called upon us again.  Through our consultations with Nicole, we've learned that she favors transitional style with a little bit of charm and rustic flavor.  This style compliments her home as well as her lifestyle very well. Our goal was to give her a high style Foyer and a beautiful, comfortable Family Room for her family to relax in and enjoy family time together.

Here is a little taste of what we designed for her...

This is the true to scale floor plan illustration we created to show Nicole where each item should be placed.

Nicole already has a beautiful paint color that we were able to work with very nicely.  The items we selected for her will look great with the current color, yet are neutral enough that should she decide to repaint one day, choosing a new color would be simple.

We chose this handsome sofa in a gorgeous neutral fabric.  We paired it with a set of two patterned chairs in the same clean, sleek shape.

We placed a beautiful console table with a slightly rustic finish along the wall behind the chairs.  Under the console table, we added these fantastic leather ottomans.  Not only will they look amazing tucked under the console, but they will come in handy any time additional seating is needed.

For personality, pattern and color we suggested adding these playful, yet sophisticated toss pillows to the sofa.  This over sized houndstooth pattern is graphic and eye catching and the woven wool texture and luxurious down fill makes them a chic designer element.

These character rich deer pillows lighten the mood of the space and compliment the houndstooth pillow beautifully.

To ground the seating area, we selected a gorgeous tone-on-tone charcoal colored wool area rug.  This rug is a perfect choice for a family. 100% wool rugs are naturally stain resistant.  The sculpted trellis pattern found in this particular rug gives it interest while the monochromatic charcoal on charcoal color scheme keeps it from overpowering the other patterns used in the space.

These pre-made drapery panels were perfect for Nicole's space.  We chose them for their subtle ombre effect.  They have just enough pattern to give the windows interest, but they are still overall light, bright and calm.

To incorporate a little time-worn character, we chose this large square distressed clock for the space above the fireplace mantel.  The rustic finish speaks to the look of a well loved antique while the square shape allows it to fit in perfectly with the contemporary items in the space.

To accessorize the mantle in front of the clock, we suggested a simple arrangement of candle holders and eye-catching spheres.

These are just some of the items we used in Nicole's family room design plan.

To make a great first impression upon entering Nicole's home, we designed a stylish and welcoming foyer.  The items we used in this space are a taste of the style we have implemented throughout her home.  We made a big statement with just three pieces.

The cabinet we selected gives a little bit of rustic charm to the entry while the fantastic sunburst mirror and graphic patterned rug provide a fresh, young, contemporary feel to the space.  The rug we selected is actually an indoor/outdoor rug which makes it practical for a busy entry.

Our Family Room

Here is Part II of my last post...the Family Rooms turn.

Who else agrees that cotton white slipcovers were the best invention ever? I think they look & fit better with every wash.

Mine get washed a lot.

I didn't add anything new. Just a quick re-arrangement of an old collection made it feel like something was new.

This zebra chair was actually a thrift store rescue.  Click here to see what it looked like before along with a quick tutorial.

Now, if only I could make it bigger...
