31 Days of Character Building: How Bold~Using Bold Prints

Welcome to Day 30 of my 31 Day Series, Building Character.  One of my favorite ways to give a space a memorable personality is through the use of bold pattern.  I find the easiest and most cost effective way to do this is with fabric.

Today, I would like to share how I gave our traditional cottage style living room a more youthful personality...

Our sofas were still relatively new and in great condition when I grew tired of the floral pattern.  I decided to give them a semi-custom makeover.  I purchased two white cotton 2 piece slipcovers from SureFit. They were baggy in some areas so, I altered them a little for a neat, snug fit.  To introduce a bold pattern,  I covered the back cushions in a large scale black and white damask fabric by Waverly.

(Before)

I traced the back cushions onto the damask fabric, cut out the shape and used it as my pattern to cut the rest of the pieces needed to cover each cushion.  The addition of cream cording along the edge gave it a custom, tailored look.

The black and white zebra chair helped to give the space a unique personality.  This chair was another DIY project that my Mom and I tackled.  I came across the chair at a thrift shop and I fell in love with the shape.  You can read all about how we recovered it, here.

The most obvious use of bold pattern in my family room is the thick black and white striped curtains.  You can see how I semi-custom made these, here.

Before the addition of the bold prints, the room was pretty flat. It was hard to tell who lived here, a Grannie or a young family...

  2. I have loved your series because I too am in the process of making a builder basic cape cod into my "dream" home on a tight budget. I love that you used ready made slipcovers on your sofa but will you post a full shot of the sofa. I'd like to see how you fitted the slipcover and how it looks after you fitted it. I love the black and white. Also, I do intend to post pics of some of my projects on my blog later. I'd love for you to visit and tell me what you think.

  3. Ok, I just almost spit coffee through my nose at the sight of your son on the couch with his glasses on. I really wish you lived next door to me and could help a clueless decorating and crafting person with these awesome projects! Is it just me or did you put out a teaser a while ago with your kitchen? Have you done all your kitchen posts? We are in desperate need of updating ours.

  4. That is so funny - I had always thought you mixed and matched Bemz or Ikea slipcovers - I guess that would be an easy idea for us non-sewers ; )
