World Traveler's Office E-Design with Progress Photos

Hi there! I hope you had a nice weekend. I did, the weather was amazing (Finally, Michigan!) and we spent a lot of family time outside. I have to admit, as nice as it was, I'm SO EXCITED to be back to work in the Design Studio this morning! I have some FUN design projects in the works! Today, I'd like to share one of them. It's a recent E-Design plan I created for an office. In addition to sharing this design plan, I also have some progress photos that show how the new space is taking shape (check them out at the end of this post). When I began working with this client, the space was basically a blank slate. My client had a really nice desk and a gorgeous RH Leather Chair. But the room itself was empty. I created a design that was inspired from an amazing art collection the client has accumulated through travels. I selected a moody blue wall color to make the pretty moldings in the space pop and to set a dramatic backdrop for the artwork.

Now for the fun part, I have some progress photos of the room, taken from an iPhone. The design installation is not 100% complete yet, but most of the larger design elements are in place. Take a peek...

Here is the cozy lounging area I created using their existing RH chair. 

This is a snack/beverage station discussed in a pretty console table. They decided against the DIY console project and found a similar piece online. 

Same with the bookcase, they decided not to build the bookcase and found a similar piece in the same finish as the console. 

The bookcase styling started with the clients special items and was filled in with books and attractive accessories.

Family Friendly Home Office

Today's featured online design plan is a for a multi-purpose, family friendly, home office.  

Our client came to use looking for a stylish, as well as functional design that allows both the children and the adults to work in this space together.  

We divided the room into two separate areas, one side is for the kids and one side is for Mom and Dad.  The kids area features two desks and a gallery wall that incorporates back pack storage, homework organization and artwork display.  

Mom and Dad's side features a large, gorgeous desk system for two.  To make the separation between the kids area and the adult area, we used two different areas rugs to define and ground each zone.  

Taupe Chevron Indoor/Outdoor Rug

We chose a family-friendly, indoor/outdoor area rug for the kids zone.  This rug is available in my shop, please click here for details.  The fun bold print makes a statement in the room while the practicality of an indoor/outdoor rug makes this a great choice for a hard-working kids space.  

Karissa 100% Wool Area Rug

For the grown up area, we chose a sophisticated, luxurious, 100% wool rug (also available in my collection, click here for details).   This beautiful rug brings color and pattern to the space, the contemporary floral design compliments the bold graphic design of the kids rug.  

Our homeowner already had two desks for the kids from Ikea.  Our suggestion was that she swap out her existing white desk tops for the espresso colored tops to coordinate with the new desk system  for the adults.  We chose this beautiful Bedford collection from Potterybarn in a rich espresso finish to create a comfortable, functional and stylish work area.  Our layout includes the corner desk, small desk and bookcase).  

Over the parents area is a perfect spot for large scale art.  To keep in line with the family office theme, these world map canvases from Bassett Furniture were a great choice.  

Office spaces by nature have a lot of hard surfaces.  To soften the design, we introduced full length drapery in a nice, neutral color.  

The room already has a gorgeous neutral wall color (BM Moccasin) that looks amazing with the new design elements. 

This project was a lot of fun.  It is a good example of how a well-planned office space can perform a lot of duties for multiple family members and look great all at the same time.

31 Days of Building Character: Nooks

Welcome to Day 23 of my 31 Day Series, Building Character.  Just to recap, throughout the month of October I am joining over 500 bloggers in the challenge posed by The Inspired Room to post on the same topic everyday.  

The topic I chose is 31 ways to bring character to a newly built, builder grade home.  After I accepted this challenge I realized 31 days was not enough time.  I could go on about this topic forever.  To save you all from that, I condensed it to projects and concepts I have used in my own home.   

Today, I would like to share how we claimed unused space in the hallway to create our office nook... 

As with most cape cod designs, our home is small.  I'm always looking for ways to maximize every square inch.  Our house has three dormer windows across the front.  Inside, one of them is open to the two story foyer, one is in the laundry room and this one is in the hallway.  

When we purchased a gigantic new computer, we realized we needed a dedicated office space.  We were out of rooms, the only available space was inside this dormer.  The idea of the office nook was born.

Not only does the office nook serve a purpose but, it also gave the hallway a personality.  Before, it was boring pass through.  Now, thanks to the built-in desk, it feels important.
