31 Days of Character Building: DIY Aged Brick Basement Walls

Welcome to day 28 of my 31 Day Series, Building Character.  A few months ago, I wrote a post on a colorful vintage dresser makeover (you can read about it, here).

I received a few emails asking me about the reflection in the mirror of the brick wall...

This dresser resides in our partially finished lower level family room.  The reason I refer to it as partially finished is because technically (by builder standards) that's what it is considered.  When we moved in the basement was totally unfinished.  We used it for storage until two years ago when we realized we needed additional living space, desperately.

(After)

We hired a local contractor to build a large family entertainment room.  Most of the finished basement is drywall and built in closets however, in some areas we kept the stamped concrete exposed.  Not only did this keep the cost of the project down, but it gave the space character.

Using a high nap paint roller I lightly grazed the concrete walls with red latex paint.  In some areas, I went a little heavier with the paint to create the look of an aged brick wall.

This is a very simple and easy way to take an otherwise unattractive space and make it special.

More on our low cost, high character basement makeover to come.
Thanks for stopping by.

  4. How did you get the pictures up on the wall? I have a basement with larger bricks on them and this would look awesome! But I'm trying to figure out a way to hang up some pictures? I'm assuming nails won't go too well into concrete.

You saved me! We recently moved into a basement apartment and two of the walls are still stamped concrete. So white! I've been wracking my brain for a way to paint them without losing the charm of them.

Also, on a strange note - do you know where you purchased the white/wood kitchen/dining table you have in the first shot? My mother was just asking me where we purchased our table that looks identical to that and I cannot remember.

    Have a great day! Thanks!

  7. I did the same thing with black paint in our unfinished basement. It was so easy and foolproof I let my four year-old help. On the other walls, I used black and white "swirly" print wrapping paper from Hobby Lobby. SO easy...but so cute!

  8. Thank you so so much for this pin! I wanted this done in my basement, but I could not convince my husband it would work. It was quick and easy! I picked out "burnt brick" for the paint color.

  9. Your basement looks great!! Did the contractor stamp the concrete? Or was it built that way? I wonder if you can have concrete stamped for a low fee? It seems like a great way to deal with a couple walls in a basement... if it's affordable. Any thoughts?

  10. Inspired by you, we painted our brick-look concrete this weekend and totally transformed our room! It took less than two hours, and has made a huge impact. Thank you for showing us how easy this is! I wish I could show you our "before" and "after", because trust me - they're dramatic!
