How To Make A DIY Wooden Stocking Planter Box

This post is sponsored by The Home Depot.
Last week I announced my partnership with The Home Depot for their Holiday Do-It-Herself Workshop (DIH Workshop).  In case you missed it, I mentioned that this Thursday I will be hosting a workshop live from Toledo, Ohio and that the workshops across the country will all be demonstrating the same project, an adorable wooden stocking planter box. I also mentioned that I was in the process of making my own wooden stocking planter box using The Home Depot's instructions, but giving it a custom look.

Here is what I came up with...

As soon as I got my hands on the step by step instructions, I went to town. It was a very simple DIY project and took no time at all. In fact, it came together so quickly I made several of them.

Before I get into how I gave my stockings a unique look, let's take a look at The Home Depot's version that will be demonstrated at the DIH Workshop next week…

Aren't they cute?
Home Depot locations everywhere will be demonstrating the project steps this Thursday at their free DIH Workshop. You can pre-register by clicking here. In the event you can't make it,  but would still like to make one, here are the project instructions:

(These instructions can enlarged by clicking on the image above. They also be found here).

I followed these steps, but made one tweak to give my stockings a unique look. Instead of free-handing a traditional stocking shape (step number two), I used a sewing pattern for a more whimisical stocking shape. I printed out a free pattern printable, cut it out and traced it onto the plywood.

(The free printable sewing pattern I used can be found here).

You can see I made my pencil markings slightly larger than the pattern to achieve an oversized stocking for a dramatic, large-scale look. Once my stocking planter box was fully assembled, I gave it a coat of white paint, taped off a few stripes at the top and applied cherry red chalk paint to the entire surface except for the box. I used black chalk paint for the box and a white chalk marker to write the kids names. To hang them, I stapled a loop of jute rope to the upper left corner of the stocking so they would hang on an angle. This enhanced the whimisical shape.

These little planter boxes are a really cute and simple way to decorate the mantel. They are perfect for small gifts or as a way to display fresh greenery or special ornaments.

In addition to these stocking planter boxes on my mantel, I also made one for the front door. I attached it to a wreath and used my chalk marker to say "Welcome" to our holiday guests. That version can be seen on The Home Depot blog.

How To Make a DIY Rustic Pumpkin Stand

This post sponsored by The Home Depot.
The other day, I shared the adorable Rustic Pumpkin Stand Project that is being featured at The Home Depot DIH Workshop this month (click here to register for the workshop near you). In that post, I mentioned that not only am I hosting a DIH Workshop in Grove City Ohio,  but also that I would be sharing my very own customized version of the project right here on the blog. The Home Depot challenged me to make a DIH Rustic Pumpkin Stand for my dining room with my own personal touch on it.

At the end of this post, check out what some of my best blogging friends did with their Rustic Pumpkin Stands. But first, here is what I came up with...

I turned my Rustic Pumpkin Stand into a super handy fall dining room entertainment caddy. I'm using it to store Halloween dinnerware and party supplies.

We're officially ready for a party!

My black dining room buffet is the perfect spot for my pumpkin stand. It helps me keep all my party supplies readily available and it doubles as festive fall dining room decor. I gave it a graphic striped paint job to make it stand out.

So many ideas came to mind on how I could use the Rustic Pumpkin Stand in the dining room. The entertainment caddy was the most functional thought I had, but I have to say this project is so versatile that it could be used so many ways.

While I love how cute my Rustic Pumpkin Stand is and how useful it will be throughout the fall season, the most enjoyment I get out of this project is how simple it was to make. The satisfaction that comes from a DIY project that cost less than $30 and a few hours of time is unmeasurable. If you are not familiar with these workshop projects, let me tell you about them. The Home Depot DIH Workshops.  are FREE, live, in-store workshops held at ALL of thier locations for Do-it-yourselfers of ALL ages and experience levels. These workshops offer step-by-step instructions on how to make simple DIY decor and home improvement projects with easy to operate power tools. Materials can be purchased to make your own project. (For more information please click here).

Here is another look at The Home Depot's version of The Rustic Pumpkin Stand…

You can learn how to make one next week at your local Home Depot (click here for more information). At the free DIH Workshop, they will be walking you through the simple steps to create this adorable and functional fall decor project this Thursday (pre-register here).  If you are unable to make it but would still like to make one, here is an easy to follow project guide with all the steps...

I followed these steps to make my Rustic Pumpkin Stand, but I made a few tweaks to give it my own look. Here are the steps I took to put my own twist on the project...

First, I made my box a little deeper than The Home Depot version. I went with a 8" depth to accommodate a large stack of dishes and bowls.

The other tweak I made was to paint my pumpkin stand with a striped paint treatment. This was achieved by taping off different sized stripes with painters tape and filling in with Charcoal colored Chalk paint by Rustoleum.

Once the paint was dry, I brought my Rustic Pumpkin Stand inside and filled it with seasonal dishes and party supplies.

Fox News Live TV Interview

Usually Sundays are pretty low key around The Yellow Cape Cod, but not today.
This morning, my alarm went off at 4:15. We were in the car driving to the city at 5:30 and by 7:15, I was at our local Detroit Fox 2 News studio on the sofa next to Johnny Carson…

Okay, maybe I was just next to his picture, but still.

As part of my partnership with The Home Depot, I was asked to participate in a live TV interview to share my interpretations of the Home Depot monogrammed wreath project and talk about our upcoming Do-It-Herself Workshop.  After meeting the beautiful Taryn Asher (our host) and my DIH Workshop co-hosts (Laura and Vicki from The Home Depot), my nerves disappeared.

Taryn and the Fox News crew were fantastic; they made the interview really fun!
You can see our segment here…

Fox 2 News Headlines

I enjoyed this experience so much that my husband and I got a little carried away.  We started tossing around the idea of becoming co-news anchors.

(Mike and I trying out the news desk)

We were just getting used to the idea of "The Mike and Sarah Show" when reality hit.  I became preoccupied with the bookcase styling on the set and was reminded that I'm a designer through and through.

Busted.

Thanks for stopping by and allowing me to share this fun day with you.  I hope to see all my local Detroit friends at the DIH Workshop in Canton next Thursday!

Thank you, Fox 2 News Detroit for being such wonderful hosts.
