My 2016 Tastemakers Christmas Tree~And a Giveaway

Please enter to win a $150 Balsam Hill Gift Card at the end of this post.
It's no secret that I love to get an early start on decorating for the holidays. I'm so excited to share my first Christmas post of the year today! Even more excited than usual because it's a special year for one of my favorite companies. A group of bloggers and I are joining in the Balsam Hill Tastemakers Housewalk in honor of their 10th Anniversary Celebration.

Balsam Hill asked me to decorate a tree in my home using ornaments from one of their new, curated collections of ornaments and trim. Take a look at the tree I created featuring the stunning Silver and Gold Collection...

This tree resides in my Home Office Dining Room. Yes, you read that correctly, this room pulls double duty as a hard working Home Office during the week and an elegant Dining Room for entertaining on the weekends.

There is nothing more romantic than a full sized tree in the dining room. The glow it casts on a beautifully set table and the festive atmosphere it creates for our holiday dinners is something I look forward to every year.

My Home Office Dining Room is small, and it's tricky to fit a full sized Christmas tree in this room without crowding the dining table. Balsam Hill to the rescue. The Fifth Ave Flatback tree is the perfect solution. Once the realistic, beautiful tree is decorated, you can hardly tell the back is completely flat. The front is full and lush and the back sits flush against the wall. It gives me the look of a full sized tree while taking up only half of the space.

When planning the theme for my tree decor, I tapped into my inner child. I drew inspiration from my childhood Christmas memories while I headed to Balsam Hill to view their latest collections. I was enamored by the antiqued gold glass ornaments featured in the Silver and Gold Collection. They have a vintage, Victorian that look creates a sophisticated, elegant theme which is perfect for a formal Dining Room. When I was a child, holiday dinners and entertaining friends and family was a big deal in my home, thinking back on that made the choice of ornaments easy.

Then something really cool happened, I stumbled upon their Miracle Flame Christmas Tree LED Candles. They instantly took me back to the Christmas trees decorated by my Mom when I was little. She always had real candles (never lit, of course) clipped to the tree. I always loved the way it looked and dreamt of how pretty it would be to see them lit.

That wish came true when I received the candles from Balsam Hill and placed them on my tree. They are amazing! They are provide a soft moving glow that is incredibly realistic looking, especially at night. They even feature a soft crackling noise that imitates the sound of a real flickering flame.
The glow of the candles highlights the Gold and Silver Ornament Collection.

To play up my inner child theme, I placed real, naturally shed, antlers covered in glitter in the branches which provide a whimsical nod towards the childhood magic of Christmas Reindeer. This sense of whimsy is further highlighted by a fun mix of gift wrap and ribbon patterns all in black and white. Mixing polka dots with oversized animal prints is a contemporary twist that contrasts with the vintage inspired ornaments for the perfect combination of old and new.

A special thanks to Balsam Hill for including me in your Tastemakers Housewalk. I'm honored to help you celebrate your 10 Year Anniversary.

Thank you for letting me share my first tree of the season with you today. Now, it's time to check out the rest of the gorgeous trees decorated by some of my favorite bloggers also joining in the  Tastemakers Housewalk...

  3. My favorite Christmas memory is gathering with my family at my grandmother's on Christmas Eve. When the night got late, Santa would make an appearance outside (secretly it was a relative dressed as Santa). Me and all of my cousins would crowd the window trying to catch a peak. That's when we knew it was time to go home and get to sleep because Santa was already out delivering toys. Now I know it was our parents genius way of corralling anxious children to sleep on Christmas Eve.

Love the idea of antlers in the tree!

  4. That tree looks great! My husband has been trying to get me to consider switching to an artificial tree... maybe we can agree on something like this!

My favorite childhood Christmas memories involve being with our extended family. It was great to have all of the cousins together, especially since we only saw each other a few times per year. We always had a big meal (similar to thanksgiving) and oodles of Christmas cookies. Yum!

  5. What a gorgeous tree! My fondest childhood Christmas memory stems from the hand-made ornaments my grandmother made. I remember adding them to the tree each year and thinking how much they reminded me of her.

  7. Gorgeous tree. The first Christmas memory that is popping up is the year I went into the basement despite my mom telling us kids not to! I saw my presents and had to act surprised on Christmas day. It really taught me the value of appreciating the anticipation of an event and the surprises it contains. email: beckmoyer@gmail.com

  11. What a beautiful tree! I have so many fond memories of Christmas as a child. We always had a live tree that didn't get put up until Christmas Eve, fast forward a few years and I recall our first artificial tree was a silver tinsel tree with a rotating color light wheel. Well I guess I just aged myself didn't I? My favorite Christmas Eve would have to be when I got my first puppy, a Shepard Chow mix named Teddy Bear!

  14. One of my favorite memories is hanging a framed cross-stitched Christmas tree on our wall each year. My grandmother, who died 20 years ago, hand made it and I've always loved it. Now that I have my own home and family, that picture makes its return each year, and I always look forward to seeing it.

  17. What a gorgeous tree and love that leopard wrap. Growing up I loved the huge Christmas Eve we had with my family and a seafood dinner, then the kids would go to sleep and my Grandma would wake us around 2am telling us Santa just came and we could open our presents, was always so much fun.

  20. Such a beautiful dining room and Christmas tree! My childhood Christmas was very simply, we didn't have a lot. One memory was my mom hanging 3 large pinecones from a red ribbon and putting them on our front door every year at the start of the season. The pinecones are are at least 75 years old! Luckily I still have them and put them in the dining room every year.

  30. As a kid we'd always go up to visit our family in Ohio--grandparents, aunts and uncles. Many are still there. My paternal grandma and grandpa, neither of whom are with us anymore, would let us stay with them because they had a nice full basement. They didn't have much space in their sunken living room for a big Christmas tree, so instead they had one of those little ceramic Christmas trees with the lights in it. Something like this: http://www.vermontcountrystore.com/store/jump/productDetail/67028

  32. In 1976, when I was five years old, my family lived on a remote island off of Alaska. Every night it was my ritual to put my two Barbies in their beds that occupied my mid-century nightstand, place a blanket over each of them and then go to bed myself. One morning a week before Christmas, I woke up and made a startling discovery. Both of my Barbies were naked! I redressed them quickly and went about my day. Later that night, I made certain they were dressed before I went to sleep.

The second morning, I woke up and discovered to my horror that my Barbies were once again naked! Again, I made certain that I put them to bed dressed, before I fell asleep. The third morning I woke up to find that not only were the Barbies naked, but they were sleeping in the wrong bed!

Paranoia consumed me! What was going on? I had no siblings, so who or what could be undressing my precious dolls? On my favorite show, Scooby Doo, the guilty party was usually the mayor or some other person who had easy access. Over a bowl of cereal, I eyed my mother suspiciously. When I was done eating, I confronted her. "Are you playing with my Barbies?" I demanded to known. My mother gave me a confused look and I explained that someone or something was taking my Barbie's clothes off while I slept at night. My mother hastily suggested I had forgotten to dress them and went back to washing dishes. Later that night, I did my best to stay awake to see who was sneaking into my room, but I soon fell asleep.

The fourth morning I awoke only to discover that my Barbies still dressed and in the same place I left them the night before. Relief washed over me! A few days later on Christmas morning, I opened a box to find it filled with Barbie clothes for every occasion! On closer inspection, I recognized some of the fabric and realized that my mother had meticulously hand sewn each outfit. My mother smiled at me and then admitted that night after night, she had waited until I was sound asleep before she borrowed the Barbies to make sure that her creations fit properly. Exhausted, she would put the naked Barbies back in my room and then hide all the evidence.

Those Barbie clothes were one of the best gifts that I have ever received and to this day, they are lovingly stored in a box in my basement.

I was trying to be so, so quiet not to wake anyone up. When I reached the living room it was only lit up from the glow of the Christmas tree lights and beautiful, wonderful items were left by SANTA!!!! I stood there in amazement. It was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen. Santa Claus had come to our house! That feeling returns to me every single year. I absolutely LOVE Christmas and the spirit it brings. We all (30+ people) go to the local tree farm, toast the trees with a cheap brandy who will never get cut down because of their appearance, and cut down a 22 foot tree to bring back to the house to decorate. This house is the house my dad and his 5 other brother and sisters grew up in. This huge tree is put up in the middle of the house and decorated with all of the ornaments from my dads childhood.

  88. Love decorating my home for the holidays! I get the music on, fireplace and candoes lit and take time to reflect on my blessings and true meaning of the season. When I was young, my brother and I would get up early, turn the lights on and sing Christmas songs. Such a magical season!!
