Fall Inspiration~Fall Nesting Fever Strikes Again

Happy Halloween my friends!

I had a fun project tutorial scheduled for today, but it was postponed at the last minute.  I'm seizing this opportunity to share some random photos of my family enjoying this season.

Fall in Michigan never gets old if you ask me.  It's such an amazing time for gathering inspiration for home design. These are some seasonal happenings that I found particularly inspiring this year.

I've got fall nesting fever bad this year, how about you?
Wishing you and your little ones a fun and safe Halloween.

Dining Room and Foyer~Two Spaces One Design

I've been busy in the design studio this week (and last) delivering brand new design plans.  A few spots have opened up if you are interested in spiffing up a room in your home before the holidays.  Click here for more information or to make your reservation.  Today's featured design plan gives Katie's dining room and foyer a warm, inviting, new look just in time for Turkey Day.

By designing multiple spaces at the same time, we were able to give each room it's own personality while making sure the new looks were cohesive.  Another plus was that Katie was able to take advantage of our multi-room discount.

The Dining Room...

…we kept the design simple, but striking.

A soft light neutral bordered area rug highlights the new dining table, giving it center stage.

Large scale art and a unique mirror fill the wall space and give the room color and personality.

We gave her a new table setting with soft gray-blue dishes and a collection of candlesticks.

Last but not least, this amazing chandelier punctuates Katie's new dining room.
By placing this chandelier on a dimmer switch, she will be able to control the mood.

In the Foyer…

...the rug makes a statement with it's gorgeous pattern.  A collection of framed mirrors is a fun alternative to using one large piece.  A soft gray-blue, oversized lamp looks beautiful on a rich, wood toned foyer table.  Preserved, potted boxwoods round out the welcoming feeling this space portrays.

Here are both spaces together…

We also had the opportunity to design the family room in this home.  By designing multiple spaces at one time, we were able to create a unique design for each space while allowing the home as a whole to flow.

Back to the studio.  More new designs to come this week.

A Fun and Sophisticated First Floor Play Room

Hi, I hope you have a fun weekend planned.  I'm in the design studio this morning delivering hot-off-the press online design plans. We've had the busiest fall ever at The Yellow Cape Cod and I'm excited to share the latest projects.

Today's featured online design project was designed for a young family with a first floor play room.  This room is centrally located in their absolutely beautiful home.  They came to me for a design that gave the space great look as well as great function.

Here is the design board from the online design plan we created:

A set of four houndstooth chairs combined with child friendly art and accessories give the room a ton of personality that speaks to the kids and sophistication that appeals to the grown-ups.

Natural textured baskets provide attractive, neat storage for the kids toys and books.

Not to mention these baskets give the simple black Ikea bookcase a higher-end look.

One fun, bright green lamp is great but two is better.
Our goal was to create a design that will grow with the family through the years.

Also included in this design plan was a true-to-scale floorplan, product source list and step by step instructions on how to implement this design.

Have a great weekend!

My Wedding In The Country

At the end of this post, please share your special-meaning-home-decor in the comments.
When I was asked by Folgers to write three sponsored posts for "The Best Part" campaign I immediately began relating this concept to home decor.  Whether I'm working on a project for myself or a client, the best part of designing is when I get to incorporate something with special meaning.

I think having elements in our home that remind us of the peaks in our lives,  somehow helps us through the valleys.

Every fall, I decorate our front porch with pumpkins, mums, cornstalks and a special fall wreath.  The wreath is not only pretty, but it has a lot of meaning to my husband, Mike and I.  It was made by my mom out of dried flowers from our wedding.
Fourteen years ago we were married in the church Mike grew up attending.  The reception was held at my parents home in the country, where I grew up.

It was a beautiful fall day.  Mother nature provided the inspiration for our reception decor.

Guests were greeted at the entrance with a fall display created by my Mother and Grandmother.
{My passion for art, home and design was inherited}.
The welcome sign was hand painted by my Aunt, folk artist MShaw.  It's two sided, the other side can be seen in my fall porch display from last year.

Simple white twinkle lights were placed in the trees and in each window of the house.
The house my dad built and I grew up in.

Sharing these photos on my blog was a hard concept for me to swallow...at first.

These photos are personal and not easy for me to put "out there".

To others, these may look like any other wedding day photos.  But to me these pictures hold so many memories.  Not only of this special day,  but also of my life leading up to that day.

Like this photo of my wedding party...walking through the yard I played in as a child.

Our friends, having fun with our fall themed"decor".

Guests, some of whom are no longer with us, enjoying my parents gardens.  The ones we grumbled about weeding when we were young but appreciated that day.

The photographer shooting our wedding album under the apple trees named after my siblings and I when they were first planted.

I warmed up to the idea of sharing these photos to prove my own theory.  The best part of putting your personal stuff out there, is the way it makes you feel.

14 years later...here is our wedding-flower-wreath on our front door.  To others, it looks like any other fall wreath.  But to Mike and I, it represents everything I just shared about our wedding day.
Every fall, I put it here.  Despite exposure to the elements year after year, it hasn't faded.
I joke by saying that it is a sign that our love was meant to last, just like our wedding-flower-wreath.
Truth is, I'm not really joking.

Now, it's your turn.  What do you have on display in/outside your home that has special meaning?  Please share in the comments.

A Design Plan Decorated For Christmas~What? Already? Yep.

It's no secret that Christmas decor is a big deal at The Yellow Cape Cod.
Many times when I am designing a space, I find myself envisioning how I would decorate said space for Christmas.

That happened last week when I delivered this design plan...

The fresh green color palette of this home office is grounded with dramatic black furnishings.  A little nature was brought into this design through art, potted boxwood a gorgeous natural fiber rug.

As we were working on this project, I began to imagine the top of the desk dressed with a gorgeous garland during the holidays.

Along side the desk, I pictured a fresh potted tree in an urn for romance and fresh evergreen scent.

Bright, apple green Christmas ornaments, pine cones and white lights adorning the tree.

Last but not least, to play on the nature theme, I imagined this guy tucked in a corner.

Providing Christmas decor is not part of my online design service.  Today, I indulged in my Christmas fantasy about this space.  I wanted to share this because it is a great example of how any design can be enhanced with tasteful holiday decor, regardless of the style or color palette.

So, there it is.  My first Christmas post and it's not even Halloween.
I am so excited to get the boxes out of the attic and go to town decorating for our 2013 Christmas Home Tour.  Details to come soon.
