Hannah's Bedroom Makeover

A few weeks ago, I shared the plan to redecorate my daughters room.  Her and I worked together to create a design inspired by a large custom pop art canvas of our dog Murphie, from AllPopArt.com.

With the popart as our guide, putting the room design together was so simple.  The graphic quality,  simple striking design, sharp contrast and gorgeous color combination of the art gave us our cues for the elements of the new space.

 Here it is...

We started with a fresh, light gray wall color (Essential Gray by Sherwin Williams).
The art made it SO easy to choose the perfect wall color.  We simply matched the gray found in the art to a paint color and used a shade lighter on the color card.  That way it complimented the art without matching it exactly.

To mimic the striking contrast of the black in the art, we chose a shiny black chandelier {Ebay}.  By keeping everything else light, the black chandy punctuates the space.

One flip through the PB Teen catalog and Hannah found the perfect bedding.  The colors and simple graphic pattern were a perfect companion to the art.

To soften it up a bit, we added the white rosette pillow {PB Teen} and whispy white layered drapes from Target.

Even though the pop art is graphic and modern, we wanted to keep the space feeling soft and inviting.  We incorporated vintage pieces, thrifted accessories and sentimental items to make the new, contemporary space feel warm and familiar to Hannah.

Her desk used to be a vintage four post bed has special meaning to her.
We gave it a fresh coat of glossy white paint,

and updated the area with new accessories.  The acrylic chair was a $10 Big Lots find and the monogrammed pillow is from PB Teen.

Hannah and I worked together to create a set of four magnetic memo boards for the wall over the desk.
You can see the step by step tutorial for the boards and the flower magnets, here.

Not only are thrift stores my favorite place to shop for accessories, but it's a fun place to get the kids involved in the decorating process.

Hannah and I went on a thrifting excursion and collected picture frames.  I'll share the details of this project soon.

Another simple thrift store makeover project was this collection of jewelry boxes.
We're using them on the dresser for stashing hair ties, lipgloss, earrings etc.

I found the iron candelabara on the curb.  We loaded it up with her Great Grandmothers vintage costume jewelry for a pop of color as well as some of Hannahs modern day accessories {aviator shades...can you believe they're back?}.

Lastly, the sconces were a garage sale find.

I updated them to match the new chandy and used them to flank a vintage mirror over her dresser.

The trundle bed {Murphie's bed} was also updated with new bedding {Kohls}.

Storage boxes from PB Teen fill the bookcase,

and provide a place for cd's, dvd's, and other unattratives.
By removing one of the shelves inside the bookcases we were able to sneak in a flatscreen tv.

Here is a look back at the design board we put together when we first received our pop art proof from AllPopArt.com.

It was so much fun working with Hannah to bring the pop art inspired design to life.

It was a good reminder that inspiration for design can come from anywhere.  When it comes from something/someone that has special meaning to you {Murphie}you'll be sure to love the end result.

In addition to pet paintings, AllPopArt.com has many other options for custom portraits on canvas. This was a sponsored post, but I can honestly say, I was so happy with the purchase that I will be ordering from them again.  The beautiful portrait we received will be cherished for years.

Introducing The Little Mack's~Our First Baseball Team

Today, I have the amazing honor of introducing you to the best T-Ball team around.  This year we (Sarah Macklem Interiors) sponsored a local baseball team.  My husband also pitched in as "Coach".
It wasn't easy to cheer "Go, Sarah Macklem Interiors" so we nick-named the team,
"The Little Mack's".

It's been a fun experience.  These guys put their heart into every game.

My husband said it best when he said, "To them, every game is the world series".

The ages of the kids on the team range between 4-6 years old, boys and girls.

They are hands down, the best behaved team on the bench in the league.

We've had some action packed plays on the field.  Every game so far has been a tie (we are 3-0 but who keeps score in T-ball?).

Most importantly, the sportsmanship shown by every player has been top-notch.
Instead of high fives after the game, The Little Mack's give bear hugs.

I have to admit, I have a major league crush on the coach.

I'll fill you in at the end of the season with more stats.
Go Little Mack's!!

Thanks for stopping by.

My Laundry Room~Win a $1,000 Visa Gift Card and $200 To Sherwin Williams

We all have secrets that we're not proud of, right?
I'm about to reveal my "dirtiest" secret.
Here goes...

Welcome to my laundry room.

Thanks to the Sherwin-Williams Perfect Palette campaign, this room is getting a makeover.  I will be using Sherwin-Williams Chip It! button to create the new room design.
By helping me decide which color palette to use, you get a chance to win a $1,000 Visa gift card and a $200 gift card to Sherwin-Williams!

As you can see, I've never done anything decorative in this space.  It's basically a blank canvas. Sometimes it's tricky starting a room design from scratch.   Luckily, Sherwin-Williams's new Chip It! button will create a beautiful color palette for me based on any image I find inspiring.  You can get the Chip It! button just like the Pin It button for Pinterest.  First, you drag the Chip It! button into your toolbar.  Whenever you spot a photo you like online, just click the Chip It! button and then click the photo itself.  Voila, you get the picture's paint colors.

Are you ready to help me decide on a color scheme?  I hope so, because I'm having a hard time choosing between these two beautiful color palettes.  By helping me, you get a chance to win a $1,000 Visa gift card and a $200 Sherwin-Williams gift card!
First, add the Chip It! button to your bookmarks bar by dragging the bookmarklet below to your toolbar:Chip It!
(click here to watch a video on how to use Chip It!)
Then, help me decide between the following color palettes:

Palette Number One
Palette number one was created from an image of a pillow I found at Dwell Studio.
Using the Chip It! button, I was provided with this gorgeous color palette:

Palette Number Two
Since this space is a laundry room, I thought it would be appropriate to look to fashion for inspiration.
This is an outfit I fell in love with on Pinterest.
Using this image and your new Chip It! button, check out the color palette that corresponds with this image:

What do you think?
Which palette do you like the best?  Number one, inspired by the gorgeous fabric, or number two, inspired by the fabulous outfit?
Which one should I use for my laundry room makeover?

DIY Magnetic Fabric Memo Boards

Last weekend, Hannah and I created magnetic memo boards to coordinate with her new room.  They were really quick, simple, and inexpensive to make.  They're going to be great for displaying her important papers and photos. Not to mention they bring softness and color to the desk area.

Instead of making one large board, we chose to make four separate boards to hang in a group over the desk.  Here is how we did it...
Materials/Tools
3/4" plywood cut into four 20" squares
one roll of tin flashing
tin snips
1/2" screws
power drill
wall hangers and drywall anchors
fabric
grosgrain ribbon
Staple gun
craft flowers
craft glue
craft magnets

The first step was getting 3/4" plywood cut to the correct size.
The nice guys at Home Depot were happy to do this for me.  I asked them to cut a sheet of plywood into four 20"squares.

Using my power drill, I attached two metal hangers on the back of each square.

I covered the front of the squares with tin flashing using 1/2 inch screws and a power drill.
The tin flashing came in a roll.   Using tin snips {and wearing canvas work gloves} I carefully cut the tin to cover the 20" inch square piece of plywood.   After screwing it into place, I lightly tapped the sharp edges with a hammer for a smooth, safe, edge.
This is the point in the project where I enlisted Hannah to help.

We used a cotton drape from the same collection as her bedding {Potterybarn Teen} to cover the boards.  We cut the drape into four 26" squares.  This gave us enough fabric to wrap around each of the boards and secure on the back with a staple gun.

For added interest, we ran a stripe of 2" grosgrain ribbon {Walmart} along the edge of each board attached on the back with a staple.

Using dry wall anchors {where the stud was absent} we mounted the boards on the wall over her desk.

We used a semi-thick fabric to cover the tin, so we needed to use extra strong magnets
found at Office Max.

To amp up the prettiness, we made flower magnets by gluing plain round magnets {Office Max} to the back of craft flowers {Walmart}.

Now it just needs her personalization...artwork, awards, ribbons, postcards, photos and other things that are important to her.

{Awe, thanks Hannah.  That's so sweet.}

This was a really fun project to work on together.

Having a hands on roll in the design process was exciting for her.
And a big help to me.

Thanks for stopping by.
