Staircase Makeover~Before and After

You may remember last year I devoted a full month of blog posts (31 consecutive days) to character building projects.  I shared 31 ways to give a builder grade home character.
Today, I'd like to add this amazing project to the list.

It's a fantastic, character enhancing, transformation of a builder grade staircase.
This single improvement has had an amazing effect on the feel of this entire home.

This house belongs to our friends, Kim and Chuck.

It's a beautiful split level constructed by a local home builder.  They've owned the home almost eight years.   They've tackled many character building projects in their home with amazing results.  Recently,  they hired a local carpenter, Eric Jaskowski with Complete Construction,  to give the builder grade staircase a face lift.
It was a big project, as it is a big staircase.  However, it was sooo... worth it.

Here is what it looked like before...

And here is what it looks like now...

The staircase and catwalk are vital organs in this split level home.
They are positioned in the center of the open-concept floor plan and visible from almost every room.

Therefore, it's a great place to spend a little cash.

By updating the builder bland banister with iron spindles,  rich dark stain,  and wooden stair treads, this builder grade home now has a luxurious custom feel.

Kim and Chuck, you did a phenomenal job making your staircase a beautiful centerpiece in your home.
Thank you for letting me share your masterpiece.

This project has me inspired.  Have you ever thought about a staircase makeover in your home?

  4. This is beautiful and it's something that I've been wanting/ thinking about for our home. I've even looked up some DIY tutorials, but like your friends, we've got quite a large staircase and the job seemed too daunting. Do you have an idea about the cost incurred to complete this job? I was just curious what it would cost to hire someone professionally vs DIY?

  12. My stairs are oak with white spindles that I've wanted to change forever! I had a painter give me a bid for $1000! That was just to paint the oak white, spindles are already white! I've gotten rid of all the oak in my home, just have the railing! I love the iron and my hubby is good at that!

  13. We would love to do this in our home but we have 2 staircases and can't fit it into our budget right now. I think we are just going to paint our rails black instead of the oak that they are currently.

  14. Beautiful job!

Other than the split in the stair case, this is exactly what we have in our home. Carpet wrapped treads and risers, oak handrail and spindles, and a beautiful catwalk overlooking vaulted great room. We are thinking of doing the same thing to our stairs! I hate it when they wrap the stairs in carpet without the wood trim along the edge of the treads and risers and I am not a fan of oak!

Any idea what they used to strip the clear coat and what kind of stain they used? I looked into changing the oak spindles to the metal ones and it looks fairly easy for someone with modest carpentry skills.

  15. We have been wanting to do the same thing to our stairs. How did they change the tread from carpet to semi carpet/wood?

  16. About a year ago, I tackled our staircase myself. I read all the instructions online, found the spindles & footers on craigslist of all places, and ended up using heavy duty builder grade wall glue (I can't think of the name) to hold them in place. I sanded the builder grade stair treads and stained them myself and then tiled the risers. They came out awesome. We have a two story foyer with a 30 foot ceiling so it makes a huge difference. It gets amazing comments.

  18. Love this! I also love the paint on the walls. Do you mind if I ask what color/brand it is?

  19. May I know what paint color/brand is that after the makeover? I love how it looks with the cherry staircase. I am planning to paint my kitchen with cherry cabinets and would love to use the same color if only I know which one is it. Thanks

  20. Could you please tell us the color of the stain? I keep coming back to this beautiful makeover and would love to do mine exactly the same! I love it!!
