In our family, my Grandma is famous for witty sayings such as; "necessity is the mother of invention". Case in point, this shelf made by Grannie herself…
It started life as a twin headboard.
After Grannie (a seasoned Antique Dealer) got a hold of it, it became a shelf. She removed the bed posts, sawed off the bottom of the headboard and screwed the pieces together on a 90 degree angle. Then, she added the brackets and vintage iron hooks.
It eventually found it's way to my Mothers Cottage where it lived a short life as a hall tree at the front door. When it was my turn to have it, I put it to use as a towel rack in the master bath.
It never stayed anywhere long enough to get a real name (it may end up as a pot rack someday. I have contemplated that a few times). Therefore, we refer to it as the "Whatchamacallit".
Grannies whatchamacallit is one of my favorite pieces. Not only because it's a unique piece made from vintage furniture, but because it has a history in our family.
