His and Her Chairs~How to mix furniture styles

One of the hot button issues for couples designing a living room together is furniture style.  This is not a true statement for everyone, but many times he wants sink-in comfort and her focus is more on aeshetics.

Today, using a design board from a recent online design project as an example, I would like to show how mixing furniture styles can result in a cohesive space.

I've always had a soft spot for rooms with "his" and "her" chairs.  It's such a wonderful representation of the people living in the home.  In this example, the soft blue fabric and curvy silhouette of her chair mixed with the straight, masculine lines and tough leather upholstery of his chair is so romantic.

Using an area rug to anchor the design helps tie mix and match furniture pieces together.  You can see how the rich brown of the leather chair and the soft blue of the fabric chair are both found in the rug.

Another reason mixing and matching chair styles works so well in this design is that we actually used two of the blue chairs.  This allows the leather chair to be a statement piece.

We chose a simple, clean lined, neutral sofa that compliments both chair styles.

Put it all together with coordinating occasional tables, pretty accessories and a fun accent color and the look is finished, cohesive and comfortable.

Along with this design board and true to scale floor plan, my client also received a shopping list with product sources, paint color suggestions, drapery recommendation and step by step instructions on how to implement her new room design.

Thanks for stopping by.
