My Home Office Dining Room

I've been busy updating photos and room tours on the blog.  Currently, I'm working on the "My Home" tab.  This post is an updated room tour of my Home Office that also doubles as our Formal Dining Room.   This room is a good example of a versatile, multi-functional space.

This room is small but it's very hardworking.  Most days, it is used as my Home Office/Design Studio.  While entertaining {and sometimes Sunday evening dinners} this room is used as a formal dining area.
I was able to accomplish this easily by choosing multi-functional furnishings.

My "desk" is actually a dining table.  We had our local glass company cut a piece of plexi-glass to protect the top of the table.  I am able to use the surface daily as a hard-working desk that is subjected to many DIY projects without worrying about damaging our formal dining table.

Most days, there are four chairs at the table.  The other four are kept in the basement and brought up when we are entertaining.

Now that we have the great "wood" floors, I can easily spin the table around to accommodate the leaf, if necessary.

Since this is the first room you see upon entering our foyer, I chose accessorize the space as a dining room.

I kept the color palette in this room neutral.  I love to decorate this space for the holidays and the neutral color scheme is a great backdrop for Christmas reds,

warm {and spooky} fall colors,

spring pastels and multi-color party decor,

The neutral color scheme also helps me keep my focus while designing for clients.

I'm less distracted by color in my surroundings and more focused the palette of my project.

The "buffet" is a thrift store dresser that also functions as a "file cabinet".  I swap the charging station and desk accessories for food serving pieces when entertaining.
The lamps stay put, they are a great source of additional lighting during work hours and they provide a soft, cozy, ambient lighting for intimate dinners.

The mirror over the buffet is a new piece from Rugs USA {The Kristen Arch Mirror}.  The extra large mirror anchored the asymmetrical room.  It also opened up the space, making it feel larger.
Tomorrow, I am going to share tips on how to hang a large, odd shaped piece like this.

  3. May I ask why you didn't center your large mirror on the wall? Or maybe was it just the way the picture was taken? Just curious! Thanks! :)

  5. Beautiful room! Everything works so well together. Funny, I looked at that mirror and have almost the exact same one only in a cream color. I purchased it about 20 yrs ago from Spiegel Catalog. I just love how architectual it looks. Great job!

  8. I love the idea of a multi-functional room. I have considered turning our formal dining room into an office/library for months, but hate the thought of losing a formal dining space. It looks like you have come up with an excellent solution. Thanks for the inspiration. Also - the new mirror is gorgeous!

  9. I love your color scheme! What color grey and brand of paint did you use?

  10. Did you repaint your room? In the pictures "From Dining Room to Office in 5 minutes" it looks like the MS Crevecoeur color. But the pictures in "My Home Office Dining Room" the walls look a lot more gray. I know it could just be the light coming through the windows or using a flash but I am interested to know if it is the same color. Thanks!

  11. I love this dining room. I have an old dining room set (table, chairs, hutch & buffet) that I am looking to update and paint black. I do believe my chair will need replacing though. I found your chairs on vcd.com but they did not have the upholstery…did you do that yourself?

  12. Love your dining room! I recently acquired a 1950s dining room set for free (table, chairs, buffet and hutch). I want to paint it all black similar to how you redid your buffet/dresser. However, my chairs are old and need replacing. I looked around vcf.com and I found solid black chairs but nothing with the uplostery you have. Did you add cushions or do something different? I need help! Thanks you so much :)

  15. i love your wall color, I actually bought the same color as you but for some reason it does not look the same as yours. My wall looks more like a deep green i did 4 coats, or is it your camera that makes it appear grey? Is there something you did first like a tinted primer or something? i really wish i knew why it came out that way. can you tell me what your process was and how many coats you did?:)

    1. Hi Anonymous,
Crevecoeur is a dark grey with a green undertone. Grey paint is very sensitive to it's surroundings, the undertone can appear stronger in some spaces than in others. Here is a link to a post I wrote about grey, the chameleon of paint colors: http://www.theyellowcapecod.com/2012/02/how-to-choose-perfect-gray-paint-color.html
I hope that helps. Best, Sarah

  16. Hi. Love this and have long ago turned my dining room into my home office, but it looks and functions like and office and it looks ugly. Since it's the first room you see, I want it to look more like a dining room. However, I live in a smaller older home and the knuckleheads didn't provide enough room. My room is 10 x 10.5. Can you give me the dimensions of your room and do you think I can pull off a room like yours with my space constraints?
