My Laundry Room Reveal~Win $1,000 Visa Gift Card and $200 To Sherwin Williams!

I'm so excited to share my new laundry room! If you missed the first two posts on this project, here's how it went down. As part of the BlogHer/Sherwin-Williams Perfect Palette Campaign, I was asked to make over a room in my home using an image that inspired me and the new Sherwin-Williams Chip It! tool. I installed the Chip It! button in my toolbar, found an image that inspired me (my dream outfit found on Pinterest) clicked on the outfit and was provided with a custom color palette.

Applying the colors shown on my chip card (Extra White, Tricorn Black, Interface Tan, Grounded and Storm Cloud) to the decor elements, I was able to bring my dream outfit to life in my laundry room.

Here is what the room looked like when I started.

Here it is now...

Here's how it came together.
I printed out my custom Chip It! color palette and took it shopping. Every element I chose for the space represents a color in the palette.

I began with the color recommendation Extra White.
I chose this highly functional wall shelf/drying rack.

Not only is it really pretty, it solves the issue of clothes hanging over the staircase to dry.

I added a small white chair to the corner under the window. It'll come in handy while folding & ironing.

Clear glass jars provide a pretty and convenient way of storing laundry soap and dryer sheets (also white).

The driftwood in with the dryer sheets is a reminder of the special day I spent collecting it with my Dad. I spend a lot of time in this room, so I wanted to incorporate a few items with meaning.

The new built-in shelves and brackets (made by my husband) were painted in white semi- gloss. They provide a ton of storage space as well as architectural interest.

The next color, "Tricorn Black," can be found in the hardware on the drying rack. The hooks are brass with black highlights from a rubbed antiqued finish.

Black is also represented in the cracks of these weathered vintage oars. The outfit had a slightly nautical feel so I tried to translate that to the room design.
The oars also reflect the color Interface Tan.

The largest source of tan in the space is the linoleum tile. I've always hated the floors in this room, but with the new color palette they actually look nice.

Tan and navy blue sea-life silhouettes dress up the shelves and add a pop of graphic interest.

Tan is also found in the fabric I used for the roman shade and the curtain concealing the laundry tub.

When I found this fabric, it was a Hallelujah decorating moment. It included every color in my ChipIt! palette.

The next color in the palette, Grounded, is very similar to the pre-existing color of the hallway just outside the laundry room.

It assured me that the two spaces would flow nicely. The brown hallway provides a beautiful frame around the new laundry room.

Rich brown was applied to the space with natural textured baskets.

Lots of baskets.
A utility room can never have too many.

Brown and white zebra fabric captures both Extra White and Grounded and
adds a touch of whimsy.

I found a large brown canvas print to hang over the mountain of laundry that is sure to accumulate in this corner.

The last recommendation, Storm Cloud, was used for the wall color. It's a little on the dark side, but all the white accents in the room keep the overall feel of the space light and bright.

I was a little nervous that it would be too dark. I decided to trust the Sherwin-Williams Chip It! recommendation and I'm sure glad I did. I'm totally in love.
Storm Cloud is a rich blueish gray, the name accurately describes the color.

The final addition to the space was a navy blue and white chevron rug. This rug against my tan floor reminds me of the navy blazer and crisp white shirt layered with the tan scarf.

So, I have a confession to make. When I was approached to participate in the campaign I was a little nervous. As a professional decorator, I was slightly uneasy about surrendering control of a room design to the ChipIt! tool. In the end, I'm beyond thrilled with the results. I'm totally addicted to the Sherwin-Williams ChipIt! tool and will continue to use it in my own home as well as for client projects.
Thank you, Sherwin-Williams and BlogHer. If you haven't tried it yet, check out the Chip It! tool video and drop the button into your bookmarks bar:

  5. My laundry room is so plain and white. I would love to make it a room I would like to go into. Laundry is not my favorite activity and it doesn't help that the room is so bland. I only use SW paint...

  6. I wouldn't have said "laundryroom"prior to reading this post. But having seen your before and after pictures I can see how mine is really not living up to it's potential. I really like the idea of using an outfit for inspiration, too. I feel completely confident in the way I dress but haven't been able to parlay that into confidence in my decorating. Im going to give Chip It a try.

  23. Wow! I just love the way your laundry room turned out. The colors are fantastic but the room is clean and so put together. You have given me some very good ideas. Is the laundry drying rack from Ballards? I've admired that rack in their catalog before.

Now if I win this, I will be doing a guest room we have. Right now it is filled with boxes and all the miscellaneous stuff from our recent move. My hope is to make this room nice and girly....because I live with all men. :)

I'm definitely going to experiment with the Chipit! tool to devise a palette for the entire house, --paint, furnishings & accessories. 125. I would probably choose the laundry room also. I've considered a lot of different colors for that room, but it has remained builder white for the past 11 years! :)

  126. Yay! This is the color combo that I picked when you asked us a while back. I just love the look of that sharp navy with the color o' burlap. It is like a "do work" in a casual kind of way. I would like to use the Chip It to do my bedroom. It is a room that I have been putting off forever. I like the drama and passion of red but don't want to be "angry". I've been told that if I paint my bedroom red that I'll go to bed and wake up angry. Ha! I've always heard to pick soothing neutral colors for the bedroom but gosh darn it I love a good deep red in a dramatic bedroom. :)

  127. I would love to do my master bedroom. I say do instead of redo, because it's never been done! Youngest child is leaving home, and it wold be the perfect time to have a fresh new start!

  128. Love the way the colors worked out in your laundry room. You've totally inspired me to use Chip It to makeover a space in my house. The room that needs it the most it our Family Room, but that will be a challenge as it is completely open to all of the other rooms on our first floor.

I have a plain white office that I would love to make into a craft room while incorporating all the organizational components I need to keep my family running! This is my own little space (no sharing with kids or husband) so I really want to add a burst of color and make it my own little space!

I also featured you on my blog today. Love your work, Sarah!

  154. Nice job on the laundry room! I installed Chip It on my toolbar a couple of weeks ago and have been having fun using it! The next room in our house to get a make over is the craft room. It's in serious need of some rearranging, organization, and color!!

  165. I love your makeover laundry room. I think it would be my favorite room in my house and that can't be good. I would make over a small room that has been serving as a storage "dumping ground" into a guest bedroom if I won. Need something creative to do in it because it makes your laundry room look large. Thanks for the wonderful ideas and giveaway. Deborah in Atlanta omahaflash@bellsouth.net

  166. I love the rich blue Color!!!! It makes my laundry room so drab. We moved into a new home where all the walls and ceiling are tan. A great color if it was one room, I feel like I am in a box. I would love to use that tool in our master bedroom to get rid of the tan box and add some elegance to it.

  175. Seeing how you used Sherwin Williams Chip It! is very inspiring to me. I've been wanting to redo my bedroom but as I'm not very design savvy I was unsure where to start. It intrigued me the way you pulled the colors of the paint chips in not just by paint but through the colors of the materials, decorations, and accents. I know I want blue as the color palette of my bedroom. I really like the combine you put together. I hope you don't mind if I borrow it? Thanks for the inspiration!
