A Perfect Day

It is an absolutely perfect summer day at The Yellow Cape Cod. The kids are done with school, the sun is shining and it is seventy five perfect degrees outside.

It's a great beginning to our week-long summer stay-cation.

Perfect Weather +

A yard full of bikes +

a porch full of flip flops +

a house full of kids = A Perfect Summer Day

The Yellow Cape Cod blog will be closed until July 12th while I enjoy some time with my family.
Happy Fourth of July!

Mossy Accents...

Today I went shopping for accessories for a client's living room.  I wanted to add a natural element and a little color to her mantle.  I knew in my mind exactly what I wanted but I couldn't find it anywhere.  I went to a few stores and finally decided to ask for assistance.

I approached the clerk and asked, "Do you have large mossy balls?"

I know...awkward.

To spare myself further humiliation, I decided to go home and make my own.

Here is what I used:

A bag of bright green spanish moss, hot glue, and styrofoam balls.

Using a glue gun, I coated the balls with hot glue and pressed the moss around them.

It's just what I envisioned.

I'm not sure what the clerk had in mind.

Geesh...

Using Home Decor To Remember My Dad

Fathers Day is bitter-sweet for me.  I lost my Dad two years ago to cancer.  It's a tough day for obvious reasons.

Today I wanted to share the ways in which I use Home Decor to keep my Dad alive in our home and part of our everyday life (without it looking like a shrine)...

Photographs:

This one (my dad and I) is in the Master in a display of photos from my husband and I when when we were children.

Here watches over the family command center (the photo in the center is him on his boat)...

Furniture:

This shelf was a gift he made for me...

Our bookcase is the dollhouse he made for my sister when she was little.

Christmas Decorations:

This entire Christmas tree is dedicated to the ornaments he collected for me over the years...

This is my daughters tree with special ornaments he gave to her...

DIY Projects:

Our home is full of projects we worked on together, like my daughters Headboard Turned Desk

Art projects:

this one pays homage to his love for the Beatles...

And this one reminds the kids of his silly words of wisdom about their teeth.

Now, on a lighter note, Fathers Day is sweet for me because I get to spend the whole day celebrating my Hubby and what a wonderful father he is...

Here are a few of my favorite pictures of him with the kids...

Happy Fathers Day!

Gorgeous Summer Lighting

Etsy is one of my favorite sources for unique pieces to use in my design consultations.
I was working on a project for a client who needed lighting when I stumbled upon this...

You have to visit their Etsy shop,  this is just a sample of what they offer.

Uh Huh...I know... these are AMAZING.
Every piece is magical and unique.

These lights speak to me in such a way that I must have one.  They remind me of summer nights spent catching fireflies in the backyard with the kids.

For the same price as off the shelf retail store lighting, you could have a beautiful piece of art.

Check out the outdoor lights...

colored lights...

GORGEOUS!

and table lamps...

I was even more excited to discover these amazing Artisans are local (Ann Arbor, Michigan).  Woot-Woot!

Check them out and let me know what you think...

I recently had the opportunity to visit Sarah and view the completed room re-design.

Here are a few of the pictures she sent to me when the project began:

Get ready for this...
here are the after pictures:

Sarah and her Hubby EJ, did an amazing job on this room.  They researched board and batten tutorials and completed the project themselves.  Sarah purchased the fabrics and sewed the curtains and table runner.  After purchasing the rug, they decided to keep the current wall color.  It looks beautiful with the new white moldings.  Sarah found some great new accessories that compliment the new look perfectly.

She has great style and a gorgeous home.  Being able to view the completed project and see how happy she is with the results is the best part of my job.
