Giving A Small Powder Room A Big Personality

Welcome to Day 4 of my 31 Days of Design Projects. Today, I'd like to share the story of a small, builder grade powder room. The homeowner (our client) came to us for a Custom Design Plan to give this small space a big dose of personality.

Here is what we delivered...

The first recommendation we made was to add custom, white, board and batten style moldings along with a dark, saturated wall color to really make the moldings and dark flooring stand out.

(This is an image we borrowed from Makeit-Loveit.com to illustrate the look)

One of the first items I selected for the space is a pivoting oval mirror in a gorgeous bronze finish that contrasts beautifully with the new gray wall color and white moldings.

For the vanity, we gave our client two options. The first was to have her current, builder grade vanity refaced in a darker finish. The other option was to replace their current vanity with a gorgeous piece like this one...

This vanity stands a little taller than a typical, builder grade vanity which makes it feel more substantial and gives it more of a presence in this small space. It has a craftsman vibe that complements the craftsman vibe provided by the board and batten trim. The open bottom shelf provides the perfect space to showcase a pretty stack of towels or an attractive storage basket filled with powder room necessities.

I selected a beautiful three light sconce with a coordinating towel bar in a rich antiqued bronze finish that coordinates with the pivoting mirror.

To dress up the towel bar, I selected a set of gorgeous linen banded towels that introduces a soft blue accent color.

To bring character to the design, I chose a large scale piece of art that features rustic wood planking and cool metal banding.  I provided this mock up to show my client how to hang the large piece of art in the space...

You can see how it is mounted halfway over the trim, keeping this extra large piece at eye level.
I selected one of my very favorite striped rugs from Dash and Albert to brighten up the floor...
