31 Days of Character Building: Super Thick Crown Molding Trick

Welcome to day 16 of my 31 Day Series, Building Character.

Today, I'm going to let you in on a deep, dark secret of my Hubbies.  I am going to share how he created the illusion of super thick crown molding throughout our home.
Instead of paying a substantial price for substantial moldings, he created a semi-faux molding from medium grade crown molding and decorative picture frame trim...

First, he installed a basic crown molding.  Then, about 3 inches below the crown he installed decorative picture frame molding.

After caulking the seams and painting the trim and the space in between the two pieces, it appears to be one large, thick piece.

This a great way to beef up moldings.   It's also an economical solution for a large room  or a space with tall ceilings where medium thickness crown moldings would get lost.

If you already have crown molding, it would be very easy to add this detail.  It makes a big difference.

See you tomorrow!

  3. I LOVE THIS and I'm totally stealing...er... borrowing it for my house! What is the color on the wall in these pictures? It's so rich but I can't tell on my computer if it's leans toward the grey or brown.

  5. Your moldings look fantastic. We did this in our last house and it made such an impact. We don't have any crown yet in our newest home and I'm excited to start that project!

  7. That is amazing! I found you on Beth's Tips & Tutes post. I will definitely try this in my house. I hope I can get it done with some liquid nails, a brad nail gun and a miter box.

Now I need to explore your blog ... I've got my eye on the b&b in the master bedroom ...

  11. So for the strip of wall between the two runs of trim, does that part of the wall not have texture? And when you paint it, the texture would be noticeable? If so, how do you get around that? Thanks!

  12. I have cathedral ceilings in my living room, and I'm wondering if something like this might be used around the room to define the height of the walls, so they don't seem to soar up to the sky. Have you ever heard of anyone using picture moulding, on either side of a plain 1x4 or 1x6?
