Not Your Grandma's Formal Living Room Design Plan

When I was little, it was clear that children were not allowed in my Grandmas formal living room.  In the event we entered, she could tell by our footprints in the vacuum marks on the carpet.  To be safe, she had everything covered in plastic.  Not kidding...even the sofa (Davenport:)) was covered in clear plastic.

My childhood memories of Grannies formal living room made this online design project somewhat therapeutic.  The space is a formal living room belonging to a young family living in a gorgeous updated traditional style home.  The formal living room is adjacent to the formal dining area in the front of the home.  It's the first space you see upon entering the foyer.  The client wanted the room to look fabulous, but it also had to be livable.  The kids often use this space for watching tv and hanging out.

My goal was to embrace the spirit of the young family while making a gorgeous first impression...

Taking cues from the adjoining dining area, which includes stunning rusty orange and white striped drapes, I created a fun, fresh, family friendly, formal living room.

This is not your Grandma's living room.  The space includes a family friendly, white cotton slipcovered sofa...no plastic or laminated slipcovers here, Grannie.  The fun and funky toss pillows (which can be found here) and child friendly art (can be found here) are balanced by grown-up, character rich, traditional style furnishings.

What are your memories of your Grandma's formal living room?

  1. Gotta love the plastic on the sofas & the plastic runners down the hallway!

  2. My grandparents did the same thing! Plastic on the couch and parts of the floor (heavy traffic areas). When my brother and I would walk across the carpet in the formal living room we weren't allowed in we would smooth out the footprints as we went. Haha! Thank you for bringing back a wonderful memory :)
    Love your designs!

  5. Ha....Had to respond to this because I had the best Grandma ever, no plastic on the sofa, but I did get to RAKE her shag carpet (1970's) after she vacuumed!

  7. This post made me laugh. I am Granny to 10. All under the age of 8 and I have white slipcovered sofas. No plastic covers anywhere but when they come for sleepovers I do bring out the quilts to protect the sofas from the chocolate milk in sippy cups and popcorn buttered hands. I like to think my style is warm and welcoming for all and that includes the little ones.
