Today, I am asking for your help naming a new series on the blog.
Here's the deal...
The time has finally come for a complete kitchen overhaul at The Yellow Cape Cod. The design plan is ready to go and we began getting contractor bids last week.
My kitchen rarely makes an appearance on the blog. It's not horrible, I just kind of...well, hate it.
Here it is...
Yesterday, while I was having my teeth cleaned, I closed my eyes and began dreaming about the new kitchen. It was all coming together seamlessly. The contractor was handling the project and managing the subcontractors. All I had to do was make design decisions, blog about it and live happily ever after in my dream kitchen. One that looks like this...
Then it happened, the bomb was dropped, right in the middle of my dream. The Dentist ruined everything. He came into the room and gently broke the news, all three of my kids have a cross bite that require braces. Three kids times three sets of braces = $15,000.
My first thought...how bad can it be living with crooked teeth...kidding.
Since my heart is set on the making this kitchen a reality, I'm going forward with the project Do-It-Yourself Style. I'll be tackling the projects myself, enlisting the help of my husband and maybe a painter.
This project will be a big one so it's fitting that I dedicate a new series on the blog. Right now this baby is titled "Don't Let The Dentist Stand in The Way of Your Dreams For a New Kitchen"
What do you think, too wordy?
I'd like to invite you to follow along with me as I plug forward with a new {small} project budget. It will be a challenge for sure. This series will include You Tube video tutorials as well as step by step DIY tutorials on the blog. I will take you behind the scenes of this project beginning to end. The good, bad and ugly of a dream kitchen transformation DIY style~on a budget.
From this...
To this...
Now, it's time to give this baby a proper name.
Please leave your suggestions in the comments or send them to TheYellowCapeCod@yahoo.com
I know you guys will come up with something witty.
Thanks!

Family last names are always great! Look into your ancestory to find unique names.
ReplyDeleteIt's funny what some think is an ugly kitchen others think is beautiful! And your before is beautiful! Can we trade ;)
ReplyDeletep.s. thinking of a name for you!! :)
Dental Denied Dream
ReplyDeleteGoing by the picture of the cute DIYer with the drill, how 'bout, "The Drilling Diva" or "The Diva and her Drill"? Of course, the braces are a BIG part of the switch to DIY so, "Brace Yourself for a new Kitchen!" LOL!I really think BRACE needs to be in the title!Have fun!
ReplyDeleteSomething with like My Kitchen Bites. Ha, get it? Bites like cross bite and bite to eat, you will be giving us "bite" size portions of your kitchen makeover along the way. Ok dorky I know! Just having fun this morning. Looking forward to this new series, I think you will rock it!
ReplyDeleteThis is great - isn't it crazy how projects appear and disappear in our lives at the most unusual times? Love the story, and sorta love the name you have now!LOL But if you insist on having a 'proper' name, maybe something along the lines of the ugly little duckling kitchen (which it is not - only in your eyes) to the beautiful white swan kitchen. Thanks for sharing - can't wait to see the DIY progress! Have a beautiful day.
ReplyDeleteyou can do it? Have you ever read about my kitchen remodel?Ours was after a pipe burst and we had no money. You'd be amazed at what a can of white paint can do. Desperation can bring out the best of creativity. :)
ReplyDeleteIf ANYBODY can do this, YOU CAN!! Your kitchen and entire house is gorgeous, and just keeps getting more gorgeous! Can't wait to see.....I'll be here watching, every step of the way!! No kitchen dreams denied!!! Inspiration photo is beautiful!
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to follow this. We bought a house with a beautiful set of cabinets that the previous owner painted a yellowy cream color (butter colored) with RED glazing! Yes, I am serious! It looks horrible so I am dreaming of clean white cabinets this year ;)
ReplyDeleteDon't BITE off more than you can chew....BRACE yourself for our kitchen re-do!
ReplyDeleteCorny I know....LOL
I think your kitchen is adorable as it is :-), you have a great base to start with you already have the black counters and stainless appliances, you can repain the cabinets yourself, and probably also sand and stain the floor darker...how exciting!!! I can't wait to see it all unfold
The Dentist Made ME Do It!
ReplyDeleteIsn't life an adventure? I agree, the current one isn't too shabby :) I'm sure it's going to be beautiful!
I like the idea of including "brace" in the title too. I am so looking forward to this process because I am wanting to do the same thing with my kitchen this year!!! Good Luck!
ReplyDeleteKitchen Dreams[on a Braces Budget].I know it needs some work, but how's that for a start?
ReplyDeleteI'm horrible at coming up with names for things like this, but I wanted to let you know I'll be paying careful attention to this kitchen update! Personally I'm a huge fan of making what you have into something you love. I know it'll be great!
ReplyDeleteFirst off-get a second opinion from another dentist. They ARE a business after all...I had a friend who was told all sorts of fun stuff that she "had" to have done ASAP to the tune of 10K! Funny how the next two dentists she consulted with told her that everything was fine-only a minor touch up as compared to an overhaul.
ReplyDeleteI love the white/black color combo. It will be fab.
Be happy you don't have METAL cabinets from 1948. Good news is we will be moving by the end of the year, so I am not even going to try to update any more than we have already.
Errrr.....I have a kitchen that you can hate on. ;-) The thing is, I just turn my eye away and continue to cook. I know painting my cabinets is the best bang for my buck. I don't have money for a major kitchen overhaul. You are starting with a nice kitchen.
ReplyDelete"Surviving Braces and a Dream Kitchen!" I will be following closely. I too have my kitchen planned and bid out, then the realization that my girls needed separate bedrooms put our kitchen plan on hold. Now we are building closets, putting in an egress window and redoing 3 bedrooms instead of the kitchen right now. I will love to see how we can cut financial corners. Can I buy your cabinets? ;) I do hope you are selling them I really like them! <a href="http://www.imamomtoo.blogspot.com>I'm a mom too!</a>
ReplyDeleteWhat about painting your current cabinets white?
ReplyDeleteYou could roll some serious dough with that rolling pin! I like your title...just sub braces or genetics for dentist.
ReplyDeleteyou may like: "sink your teeth into this" ...
ReplyDeleteWe used to have a maple kitchen - my husband did a fabulous job on the installation and finishing touches. He's a professional accountant so I always say that I can 'count' on him to do good work! We chose a white kitchen for our new-ish house (3.5 yrs) with mottled slate-blue/copperish brown textured laminate countertops and dark stained hardwood floors. Definitely not 'high-end' but it sure looks it! Good luck with your renovations in both the construction and dental varieties!
Cross bite kitchen or The bracess kitchen
ReplyDeleteHow about "Em-Bracing My Kitchen"? What a bummer that the dental disaster has you slamming the brakes on your previous kitchen re-do plans. Kids and braces go together like peanut butter and jelly! When we found out that our 2 kids (a year apart) needed them, I knew our son was not ready yet to take care of his teeth the way he would have to with braces. It would have been a nightmare for me chasing after him all the time with his toothbrush. Our daughter, however, was very responsible and I knew it would not be a worry. After a couple of years, our son asked for his and then we knew he was ready. Softened the blow a bit.
ReplyDeleteBTW, I abhor my kitchen. I don't think I have the bravery or talent you do to even attempt a DIY. Good Luck!
Your family pictures will look wonderful over the years with all those fabulous straight-toothed smiles!!!! So worth it! Kudos to you for not letting a financial setback stop you from making your kitchen dreams come true! I like all the "brace" and dentist titles, but how about a practical title that will stand the test of blog time and that new people to your blog can relate to. How about The DYI Designer Kitchen Project... and a tag line of "getting the look for less". Straight forward and understandable.
ReplyDeleteNo matter what the kitchen project name becomes I am looking so forward to all the upscale changes as we watch your kitchen dreams become a reality. I love your determination... and style!!!
Yvonne
Your halfway there if you ask me. You have similar elements and could easily pull of that design :-D
ReplyDeleteI am so excited to watch this unravel. I am actually going to be tackling a mini kitchen redo, as I rent, but have a landlord who is nice enough to let me repaint cabinets, add hardware and a new faucet.
ReplyDeleteYour dream kitchen is similar to my dream...
Good luck! Now, as for a title...Project White Coat and Tool Belt =)
Cookin' Up a Delicious Dream in My Kitchen...

ReplyDeleteI'm in the process of a DIY kitchen makeover too! Can't wait to get some tips!
From the Extraction to the Crowning of a Kitchen Makeover! :)
ReplyDeleteProject "Tooth and Nail"? :) Good luck and can't wait to see pics of the process and of course the finished product!
ReplyDeleteCrossbite Counterculture!
ReplyDeleteEm-Bracing My Kitchen! (You beat me to it Judy!) :) I would just tweak it a little and add Dream Kitchen! Or how bout Em-Bracing My Dream Kitchen DIY Style!? Or, Brace Yourself! A DIY Dream Kitchen Makeover! Looks like there are some good candidates out there. Good Luck!
ReplyDeleteRustoleum Cabinet Transformations! You can do it, I did!
ReplyDeleteHow about, "Just say Ahhhh!"
ReplyDeleteCrooked perfection. : )
ReplyDeletehmm, braces or bicuits?
ReplyDelete"Doing it Myself" just a remake of the DIY thing from your prospective.
ReplyDeleteOh how I feel your pain! 3 of my kids need braces so far..the other two aren't big enough to know yet. But I'm not crossing my fingers! The first one just got his off. Good luck! I am so excited to see your kitchen transformation! I know it's going to be beautiful like the rest of your home.
ReplyDeleteHi Sarah! Love your kitchen as is but I know you will make it even more fantastic.
ReplyDeleteHow about something simple like "emBRACE my kitchen project"! Good luck and can't wait for finished look.
Sincerely, Jeannette

Have you looked into dental colleges, they offer great deals ???
ReplyDeleteKathy :)
It will be gorgeous! We just had our cabinets painted a light cream and I'm wondering why I did not do this years ago. It made it look like we moved it's so different. Painting the cabinets is not that expensive. I was surprised. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteGirl! I'm right with ya! My kitchen cabinets are a walnut color and so drab for our open space layout kitchen! I think painting is a fabulous idea! Would you do it yourself? If so please keep us posted on the details! :) You're home is beautiful!
ReplyDeletePS: I'd get a second opinion on your kids teeth ;)
I am SO in your boat! While we don't really pay anything for routine dental visits (90% of our family have great teeth) we more than make up for that in orthodontic charges. It so steals all the fun out of planning home projects!
